Now more than ever our homes are becoming our safe spaces. We’re spending more time in them and there’s an increasing focus on creating a sense of calm and cosiness. So it’s no surprise then that the Danish concept Hygge is back.
The darker, colder months are the perfect time to hunker down and get comfy. So here’s how you can explore the concept of Hygge yourself.
What is Hygge?
We’re sure you’ve heard the word before but what is Hygge? And how do you pronounce Hygge?
Firstly, Hygge is pronounced “hoo-gah” and is a Danish word that basically translates as ‘cosiness’. But it’s about far more than surrounding yourself with gorgeous soft furnishings and comfort.
Hygge is a lifestyle, it’s about umplugging from the world and creating a sense of calm. Not just in your homes but in your minds too. This year has been so stressful so we think we could all do with some Hygge in our lives.
With that in mind, at Maison Rustic we have a range of Hygge pieces that will get you cosy on those long winter nights to create a sense of calm. So grab a cup of cocoa, pop on your comfies and check out our top tips for Hygge happiness this season.
How to Hygge
The great thing about creating Hygge is that just a few small changes can make a big difference.
Why not start in the room where we all tend to switch off. Your bedroom. Make your private space of haven of Hygge with cushions and throws. Turn off your laptops, TVs and phones and instead lie down with a good book. Listen to your favourite music or even better download a mindfulness app such as Calm or Headspace.
To keep things comfy, introduce new textures to your bedroom. Think oversized cushions and textured throws. Check out our soft furnishings to find something to suit your style.
Turn the lights down low
The Danes love to put their feet up in front of a real fire, the flickering flames will calm and soothe at the end of a long day. If you’re working from home, or at home self-isolating, why not create a change of pace when the evening starts by drawing the curtains and lighting the lanterns. This is a great way to switch up the atmosphere, turn down the volume, and create another part to your day.
Maison Rustic founder and interiors expert Georgina Hustler-Sutton is a big fan of lanterns.
“Arrange a few lanterns together in a cluster to create that warm, comforting atmosphere. This really does work a treat! Why not group a cluster of lanterns together to create a warm, focal point? It creates a lovely ambiance and is an easy and effective way of upping the Hygge in your home.”
Our full range of lanterns includes geometric glass lanterns through to rustic woods, metal, glass, and silver.
Hygge your home with houseplants. Nothing says Scandi-style more than a few succulents. If like us, you’re not that great with real plants, check out our range of faux plants. We love these hanging rope plants with the monochrome design. There’s just something about black, white and green. The natural material of the rope boost your mood and create a more mindful vibe to your home.
Candles are at the very heart of the Danish art of being cosy. Turn off your lights and tune out with candlelight. Why not add a few wintery scents to your candles. Give Nordic a nid with the scent of berries and spice. Candles are not only beautiful for your own home, they’re the perfect gift for a friend this season too.
Scatter candles throughout your home, from the side of your bathtub to the breakfast bar.
Check out the Masion Rustic collection of scented candles, we really do have something to suit every mood and every moment. Our full range is available online and we can deliver direct to your door!
Find your space
Create a cosy space for you to sit and relax. A comfortable chair with your favourite cushion and throw with a scented candle nearby. Or a cosy nook on a bench in the kitchen could work, with a few textured pieces scattered to create the Hygge vibe.
Wherever you choose to find Hygge happiness, choose your space, add some fluffy cushions and a throw, light a candle and finish with a good book and a cup of hot cocoa. Hygge heaven!
Apparently the Danes are the second happiest people in the world. At Maison Rustic we want to help you embrace Hygge to create a happy home.
